Teaching Advanced English Vocabulary: Collocations

This master's thesis examines the significance of collocations in the English language teaching at the corresponding level of secondary schools, i.e., B1 and B2 levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The thesis deals with the linguistic aspect of collocations in the theoretical part and is based on the methodological approaches to vocabulary teaching. It analyses selected English language coursebooks: English File, Headway, New Success, High Note, and Maturita Solutions, in order to gain insight into the methodological approaches to developing collocational competence, and the variety of exercises related to collocations. The research offers valuable resources and activities designed to support deeper understanding and practical application of collocational competence among language learners.
Collocability of German Adjectives in a Bilingual Dictionary

This diploma thesis researchs the collocability of the german adjectives and gives some suggestions for the presentation of the collocability in the microstructure of the adjectival entries in the German-Czech translatory dictionary. The diploma thesis is a secondary product of the project of The Large German-Czech Academic Dictionary which has been realized in the Institute for German studies of the Phaculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague since 2000. The lexicographs use the methods of the corpus linguistics, especially a combination of the concepts corpus-based and corpus-driven. Analogous methods were used in this diploma thesis. By means of the Cooccurrence Data Bank (CCDB) of the Institute for the German language in Mannheim the most frequent cooccurrence partners of an adjectiv were found, concrete dictionary examples were found out in the corpus DeReKo of the IDS Mannheim using COSMAS II or on the Internet using the search engine Google. The dates were saved in a special numerical chart of a data bank which is structured on the basis of word classes. The collocational competence of EFL students in relation to their cognitive and affective predispositions.

The dissertation deals with the collocational competence of English language students and its relation to the naturalness of language production. In addition to the theoretical foundations of the research, the main focus is first given to the definition of collocational competence, followed by the presentation of the research project itself - a teaching intervention with students from Charles University (n = 39) over the course of one semester. Students were divided into an experimental group with explicit collocation instruction and a control group where teaching was conducted in a traditional way. The primary aim was to explore whether instruction inspired by lexically-oriented approaches contributes to the successful development of collocational competence. At the same time, we monitored individual differences, such as foreign language aptitude, anxiety, motivation, and learning strategies, and their impact on the learning process. The results suggest that explicit instruction of language in general is beneficial for students with higher levels of anxiety and weaker foreign language aptitude. FROM TEXT ANALYSIS TO DISCOURSE INTERPRETATION OF DONALD J. TRUMP'S TWEETS

Since its creation in 2006, the social platform Twitter has already excelled its function of a medium, originally designated to facilitate sharing experiences, reflections, and ideas. Most operating systems enable access to the Twitter application and this communication platform is being used in both media and marketing fields, for educational purposes, as well as in politics as a means of communicating information and sharing messages considered important enough to be published on the platform. Using Twitter for communication purposes on the political scene is still a fairly new phenomenon and therefore an interesting subject for a linguistic analysis. The diploma thesis uses textual analysis and discourse analysis to describe and to interpret the linguistic strategies employed by the former American President Donald J. Trump in his Tweets. The data - two data sets - subjected to the analysis were collected from the period during the presidential campaign in 2020. The first data set covers the period at the beginning of the campaign, whereas the second data set includes Tweets posted towards the end of the campaign, close to the Election Day. The analysis combines the use of Czech National Corpus tools, namely the application KWords, and a microanalysis of the chosen data sample in order to identify dominant linguistic strategies and to interpret in which way(s) they contribute to the communication strategy of the American President on Twitter. With respect to the field of study, the thesis illustrates the importance of mastering the skills of a textual analysis and discourse interpretation, both prerequisites necessary for a translator, in the proper understanding of the communicative function of a text without which achieving a quality translation into the target language would not be possible. The thesis is written in the English language.
Collocability of the most frequent nouns in COVID-19 forum threads - a corpus study

This Bachelor's thesis deals with the collocability of the most frequent nouns used by users in COVID-19 forum threads. Online discussion forums are well-known for the diversity of opinions of its users where every user may have their own specific style of expression, sentence formation, and also vocabulary of often used words. The theoretical part mostly concentrates on the terms "phraseology" and "collocations". Regarding collocations, besides general description a closer look at individual categories and types of collocations is also provided. The ending of the theoretical part concentrates on collocability and its concept. The practical part contains the corpus research of data gathered using a script from a Reddit forum. This data is subjected to analysis and is used in the creation of a corpus with the help of #LancsBox software. Subsequently, a frequency list of nouns is created and a collocational profile for the most frequent nouns is developed. The thesis analyses which collocations most often occur among non-professionals in discussion forums on the current topic of COVID-19 and at what frequency they occur.
Present-Day English Equivalents of the Czech Concept of ´cesta´ and Their Collocational Restrictions.

This diploma thesis consists of two parts: the theoretical part focuses on linguistic terms as synonymy, synonymic group, synonymic dominant, collocation, context etc. The exact specification of these terms serves as a background for practical analysis of extracted examples. The purpose of the practical part is a detailed analysis of the most frequented synonyms of the notion of ´cesta´ in present-day English and their collocational restrictions. The research is based on information acquired both from theorethical sources and from various authentic English texts written in the past 50 years.
Adjectival, Verbal and Nominal Collocational Patterns of the Word ´ life´.

The topic of this diploma thesis is the adjectival, verbal and nominal collocational patterns of the word {\clqq}life.`` In the theoretical part I started with the terms {\clqq}collocations and syntagmatic relations`` and compared different points of view of various authors. Then I briefly mentioned the peculiarities of the following terms: adjective, noun and verb. Nevertheless, my thesis focuses on practical reseach of the examined excerpts. This part is mainly concerned with the functions which the word {\clqq}life`` can have and explores what adjectives, verbs and nouns it habitually collocates with.
Phrasemes in the work by M. Viewegh and their Czech Translations. A Corpus Analysis.

This thesis deals with contrastive phraseology. It compares the use of phrasemes in the work by M. Viewegh and their German translations, with focus on somatic phrasemes. The thesis is conceived as a corpus analysis. For the purpose of the thesis was chosen three Vieweghs texts and their German translations from the InterCorp corpus for comparison. InterCorp is a parallel corpus that was created at the Institute of the Czech National Corpus at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague. The object of the work is to describe differences or correspondences in the use of somatic phrasemes in the work by Viewegh and its German translations.
